What we do...

Practically everything that the Federation of Canadian Naturists (FCN) does is, in some way, a reflection of its Official Purposes and especially, its Mission Statement:

Our Mission: The Federation of Canadian Naturists is a member-supported, not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering a greater understanding, acceptance and appreciation of naturism as a way of life throughout Canada.

To fulfill this mission, we carry out a variety of services, events and activities. What we do may also change over the years to meet changing needs, emerging technology or new opportunities. However, even if some of our activities change over the years, they will always remain constant in their objective to fulfill our mandate.

Our status as an incorporated, member-owned organization also affects the type of work we do. Our membership focus is primarily on the residents of provinces and territories in Canada, except for Quebec. The Fédération québécoise de naturisme (FQN), with who we have a close working relationship, primarily represents naturists in Quebec. (To learn more about our status as a member-owned, not-for-profit organization, check out our Organizational Overview page.)

Most of the work of the FCN is done by our members. These are dozens of people from across Canada who have a variety of skills and talents. All of these individuals work as volunteers, with some helping occasionally, while others do ongoing work.

As with many not-for-profit groups, the work we do can be grouped into a few basic categories. Even if some of our events and activities change from time to time, the categories themselves remain unchanged. These categories are:

Membership Services – This category includes anything that serves our members, either as a group or individually. This includes:

  • Producing and distributing “Going Natural” Magazine.
  • Maintaining a Members-only section on our web site.
  • Providing regional representatives, with 2 per region in each of our four regions.
  • Organizing the Annual Naturist Festival, in partnership with the Fédération québécoise de naturisme (FQN).
  • Supporting and networking with our member clubs.

Outreach & Education – This broad category includes anything that we do to raise awareness of naturism and our organization. This work can be further divided into two subcategories to address two distinct demographic groups: the general public and Canadian naturists. This includes:

  • Brochures, fact sheets and other materials on naturism.
  • Electronic outreach, including our web site and social media.
  • Media relations through releases and interviews.
  • Promotional items such as pens and other small items.
  • Outreach to the general public through community events, such as street fairs.
  • Outreach to the naturist community at clubs or special events.

Legal Advocacy – This includes any work that defends or advances the rights of naturists within the Canadian legal system. This includes:

      • Consultations with various levels of government about naturist-related issues.
      • Assisting groups and individuals with our legal defence fund.
      • Legal challenges to the Criminal Code of Canada.

Special Projects & Initiatives – These are a variety of activities that fulfill a specific goal. Quite often these special projects are undertaken to build capacity, either to improve our services or create new ones. Some typical examples include:

      • Updating our website.
      • Developing new educational materials.
      • Planning for new events or activities.
      • Developing long term strategies.

Fund Raising – This can be any activity that raises funds. To help cover our operation costs, we rely on sales and donations. The proceeds from sales and donations may be allocated for general use or a specific need. Sale items include the FCN flag and tote bags, which may be sold:

      • Through direct sales at the Annual Naturist Festival or community events.
      • On-line sales through the FCN website.

Administration – This category includes anything that provides management, oversight and accountability for our organization. This work is primarily the responsibility of the Board of Directors and includes:

      • Finances, including paying bills, banking and record keeping.
      • Maintain our membership records.
      • Ensure that all filing and other activities comply with federal regulations for incorporated not-for-profit organizations.
      • Organize an Annual General Meeting.
      • Assess new challenges and opportunities.
