15 Reasons Why the Sun is Good for You

Most of us start smiling when the summer comes and it’s no surprise—a little sunshine every day can boost your mood and also help to prevent a host of serious illnesses.

FOR years we have been told to cover up in the sun to cut the risk of getting skin cancer. But now it seems that a little bit of sunshine on your body is actually good for you.

Studies have shown that a sensible amount of sun reduces your risk of several cancers and other serious health conditions.

And it’s all thanks to vitamin D, which is made by our bodies through the action of the sun’s UVB rays on our skin. Go out in the sun without sunblock for between five and 15 minutes a day, at least three times a week in spring and summer, to boost our vitamin D levels.

Now here are the top 15 ways in which the sun can improve your health...

1. It cheers you up

SUNSHINE boosts levels of serotonin - the body’s natural happy hormone. That’s why we tend to feel happier and more energetic when the sun shines. Regular sun can stave off moderatedepression, particularly if combined with exercise, such as a walk in the park. It’s also been shown that exercising outdoors creates more endorphins in the body than exercising indoors.

2. Reduces heart disease

A STUDY in the British Medical Journal showed that people in the UK are more likely to die of heart disease in winter than in summer, which is believed to be because of low levels of vitamin D. Where you live in the UK also matters. Blackpool has 27 per cent more hours of sunshine a year than Burnley - and 9 per cent fewer deaths from coronary heart disease.

Cholesterol levels also rise in winter, according to reports in medical magazine The Lancet, and this is because our vitamin D levels fall.

And Dr Holick found that exposing people with high blood pressure to UVB rays in a tanning salon lowers blood pressure by similar amounts as prescribed drugs.

3. Prevents diabetes

VITAMIN D may help to prevent the onset of diabetes. “A study in Finland found children given a vitamin D supplement for several years had an 80 per cent reduced risk of developing Type I diabetes as young adults,” says Dr Holick.

A deficiency in vitamin D is also thought to contribute to Type II diabetes, according to a recent study by Dr Barbara Boucher at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospitals.

4. Beats SAD

SEASONAL Affective Disorder (SAD) - or the winter blues - is a depression specifically caused by lack of sunlight. Lightboxes can be used to treat it, although increased exposure to natural sunlight is more beneficial. Get out for an hour’s walk in the morning during autumn and winter months, and sit outside for 15 minutes a day in summer.

5. Helps prevent MS

MULTIPLE sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system, leading to tremors and even paralysis. The cause is not known but scientists have noted that exposure to sunlight in childhood appears to dramatically reduce the risk of developing this disease in later life. Scientists have also noted that the incidence of MS is lower in sunnier countries.

6. Prevents cavities

THE sun could even help to keep your teeth strong. A dental study found the prevalence of cavities was greater in children from Scotland, the North-West, Wales and Merseyside - areas with less than average sunshine. The proportion of 12-year-olds with untreated cavities was three times greater in Scotland than in the South West Thames region.

7. Relieves aches and pains

Being out in the sun helps to warm the body’s muscles and eases stiffness, reducing the pain caused by inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

8. Reduces risk of cancers

ALTHOUGH over exposure to the sun increases your risk of skin cancer, vitamin D provided by sunlight can actually help to significantly reduce your risk of other types of cancer.

A study carried out by the US National Cancer Institute found that people exposed to high levels of sunlight were significantly less likely to die from breast and colon cancer. A similar effect was seen in bladder, womb, oesophagus and stomach cancer.

9. Boosts fertility

THE sun reduces levels of the hormone melatonin which suppresses fertility, so it is more likely you’ll conceive in summer.

And sunlight not only makes you more fertile, it increases the length of your fertility. A study in Turkey discovered that women who get less than an hour of sunlight a week reach menopause seven to nine years earlier.

Sunlight also boosts testosterone levels in men, which makes summer the perfect time for baby-making.

10. Gives you more energy

MELATONIN also regulates sleep, so having lower levels of this hormone in your body gives you more get up and go. This is why you need less sleep in summer but still feel livelier. Plus, being woken by natural light rather than an alarm clock helps you feel more positive.

11. Eases IBD

PEOPLE with Crohn’s disease or other inflammatory bowel disorders (IBD) generally have low levels of vitamin D in their bodies, according to several studies. Sunlight is the best way to boost vitamin D in these cases.

Although it is available in some foods (including meat, eggs, oily fish and some breakfast cereals), levels are low and poor absorption of fat - a common complication of inflammatory bowel disease - may make it difficult for sufferers to absorb vitamin D from their diet.

12. Beats period problems

ABOUT one in five women of childbearing age suffer from polycystic ovary disease which causes abnormal periods, unwanted body hair and infertility.

Half of 14 women treated with vitamin D and calcium by Dr Susan Thys-Jacobs at St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, Columbia University in New York, recovered normal periods and two became pregnant. Dr Thys-Jacobs also found that women with premenstrual syndrome are likely to be deficient in vitamin D.

13. Helps skin conditions

EXPOSURE to the sun can help to heal such skin conditions as psoriasis, acne and eczema. Regular controlled sun exposure is often prescribed for sufferers. For serious cases, contact your GP. For minor cases, try exposing affected areas of skin to the sun for up to 30 minutes before covering up or slapping on the sunscreen - but make sure you never burn.

SUNLIGHT encourages the production of white blood cells, which help to boost your immune system and fight infection.

YOUR skin starts to turn pink when you’ve been exposed to enough sun. It takes around half this time to produce vitamin D without risking your skin (usually between 10-15 minutes between 10am-3pm in the UK). It takes black and Asian skin up to six times longer to produce vitamin D.

Of course, it’s not for everyone, but then, neither is Madonna nor the Red Hot Chili Peppers, NBA basketball nor Batman. But once most young couples and boyfriends/girlfriends try it, they come back. Why? Because it’s fun. You probably know people who have vacationed at nude beaches, who skinny-dip in their backyard pool or who lounge around the house nude. Why not?

It’s healthy!

Besides improved self-esteem, the sun relieves stress, provides you with Vitamin D, a tan with SPF 4 protection and helps clear acne. Naturists don’t overdo their time in the sun; they tan safely with a sunscreen.

It feels good!

You know how gross those jeans and bra straps feel on a hot sticky day? Or that wet swimsuit when you come out of the water! No more! Trade it in for the feeling of wind on your back and the sun on your body! Cool!


You’ll feel great about yourself! Nudity helps you become more open and accept yourself for whom you are, not whether you measure up to the supermodels you see in ads. Welcome to a place that does not measure value as a human being by body size! It makes you a stronger, more confident person.

It’s normal to feel apprehensive on your first visit, but since you’re in control, you have nothing to lose by checking it out!

It’s so refreshing to be someplace where nudity is not sex, unlike ads, movies or TV. You don’t have to look like an actor or actress from Baywatch! Everyone in a nudist park is having an orgy? NOT! That is Myth # 1! (People who think nudity is about sex find it a lot more convenient to go to strip bars. Besides, the naturist resort owners don’t let those people in anyways.) Lewd behaviour is NOT allowed. Ever!

How to Introduce a Friend to Naturism

Do you enjoy visiting nude beaches and resort but have friends, relatives or partners who feel reluctant to join you?

Are you single and find it difficult to attend naturist resorts by yourself?

You may be single, but you are not alone. Many others face the same situation.

How Do You Encourage Someone to Consider Trying Naturism?

Naturism is about respect for one's body, for nature and for each other. Because of the wholesomeness of these principles, naturism has always been a social, strongly family-oriented activity.

Thus Canada's naturist resorts and most of those throughout the world, plan most of their activities for couples and families with children.

Resort owners consider it important to keep the numbers of men and women as equal as possible to ensure everyone feels comfortable. As a result, most resorts limit the number of single persons allowed to attend; a few clubs accept no single persons unless they bring a member of the opposite gender.

Beaches and non-landed clubs are often more open to singles but most people still prefer to go with their friends.

Even outside naturist circles, single persons in their 20s start to feel isolated and left out of activities as their friends marry and have children. Most people do not expect to remain single forever, but it does happen. A person can also become single again at other periods in one's lifetime, due to choice or circumstances.

Therefore, it important to find single friends with which to share hobbies and interests. We assure you we know how difficult it is, especially for some shy or introverted persons, to make friends, let alone bring them to a naturist setting. However, it can be done and is being done.

More single men than single women initially try to participate in naturism. There are many reasons for this.

  • Men are more willing to try things on their own; women tend to want to do things with other girlfriends and may feel reluctant to suggest trying naturism.
  • Advertising, movie and televisions portrayals of women often make them feel inferior if they believe that they do not have a "perfect" body; they may fear comparison with other women.
  • Group nudity is more comon for men than women whether in locker rooms or bathrooms.
  • Women are erroneously tought by society that it is virtuous to hide their bodies.
  • Single women sometimes feel that men are after them and they may think that being nude makes them more vulnerable.
  • Men still tend to be the dominant gender so if a marriage breaks up, it is likely the man who keeps the naturist membership. This, unfortunately, reflects the society we live in, rather than naturist values.
  • There may be other reasons, such as a dislike of roughing it.

On the other hand, while women are the gender most reluctant to try naturism initially, they are often also the most enthusiastic gender once they have experienced it.

However, finding a friend who might be interested in naturism is just as difficult for women as it is for men.

Natural Nudity is Healthy

Naturism is wholesome, healthy and not linked to sexual ideas or activity. Non-naturists often do not understand this because movies, television, music and advertisements so often portray nudity and sex as the same. Pornography has also given nudity a bad name.

A naturist woman's new boyfriend may not believe that, when she goes to a nudist resort, men who see her nakedness will not accost her. He may become jealous and greatly bothered by this.

On the other hand, a naturist man's new girlfriend may be suspicious of his motives and may be wary of giving naturism a try.

What Can We Do About It?

As with most problems, a good way to resolve it is through respectful communication. You and the friend you would like to attract to naturism must have confidence and mutual trust in each other. People need to be reassured, not coerced, so be honest — deception always backfires.

  • Tell the friend about a good place to go to where you would like to spend time with him or her.
  • Emphasize the positive aspects of the club — the family atmosphere, the rules of behaviour making it a place where people feel safe, the facilities, activities and so on.
  • Let them read the FCN's Frequently Asked Questions which deal with most of the questions and concerns that newcomers can have. They are available online or in a brochure format. Write to the FCN for a copy.
  • Show them magazines (such as Going Natural) and videos to get them used to the idea. Be careful to select magazines and videos that truly reflect the ideals of naturism. There are several videos and magazines who say they are naturists but which are really exploiting naturists. Review the video or magazine first.
  • If he/she is hesitant to look at the publications or a naturist video in your company, do not push it. Suggest he or she take them and look them over alone. Do not force an immediate decision. It takes more time for some people to decide than for others.
  • Once you have a friend's interest and he/she understands it is a place where people behave with respect towards one another, make sure you mention the lack of bathing suits. Explain that nudists have the common sense to know when and where it is appropriate to be nude.
  • Make it clear to the friend that he/she is not obligated to be nude on the initial visit at most resorts. (There are exceptions, so call ahead to check; if nudity is mandatory, make sure you say so.) He/she is welcome just to see what the resort is like and is free to leave any time.
  • Call the resort in advance and inform the owner you will be bringing someone who is a newcomer to naturism. Resort owners are happy to help make your friend feel welcome on his/her initial visit.
  • Above all, BE PATIENT! Being pushy or excessively eager will make make them suspicious and may cause a negative backlash. Once a person's mind has turned against an idea, it becomes very difficult to chance their mind.

Sometimes naturist friends and acquaintances can be of help before the initial visit. Meeting some of them to see what they are like, before visiting the club, may help your friend break the ice.

For people who live together, it may easier to get used to nudity in the home first. Walking around the residence nude can help a person deal with their preconceived notions.

Most important of all, use your common sense and some sensitivity in bringing up the subject. Human beings all react differently to different subjects, so use your judgment on what type of material to give someone to look at. Items expressing the family atmosphere will usually make people feel at ease the most, but it is a judgment call on how best to approach the subject with each friend.

Ultimately, most of the solution rests with you. Use common sense rules of etiquette, courtesy and respect.

Accept your friend's decision if he/she does not wish to participate. Naturism is not for everyone, but then neither is white-water rafting, stamp collection, gardening, eating chocolate nor watching Hockey Night in Canada. Perhaps another friend will be interested. Meanwhile, there really is much empathy for your situation. You are not the only person trying to deal with this issue.

Respect Others; Get Involved

When you do attend a naturist resort alone, people will accept you more readily if you have consideration for others. Others probably will not appreciate it if you use meeting someone new as an opportunity for a pick-up.

Sometimes a person may be alone because he or she is shy and would welcome someone to talk to or play tennis with. Other times, people may simply prefer to enjoy quiet time to themselves reading a book under a shady tree. So instead, get to know the other individual as a friend or respect that person's privacy if he or she wishes to be by him or herself.

Also, people accept single persons more readily when they try to be active in any naturist organizations they do join. There are all kinds of volunteer activities you can help with. Write the FCN to offer your help and find out what you can do, or offer to help the resort owners organize an event.

If the resort is not admitting more single males at this time and turns you away, do not become hostile or defensive. It will not make it easier for people to accept you next time.

Is it important to understand the club owner is doing his/her best to make the single women at his resort feel comfortable. Having too many men tends to drive women members away. Often people do not want to believe, this, but it is, nevertheless, true, both in naturist and non-naturist settings.

Instead, take the positive approach. Do your best to find a friend of the opposite gender to bring, and do get involved when you attend.
